mark I see what you mean but what about if u have a sun box and pentium - respective equal MHZ speeds are not the same. the sparc chip blows the pentium chip out of the water and yet the pricing structure remains the same? but i do see yr point! regards doug -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Mark Pollard Sent: 09 October 2000 14:50 To: 'MapInfo List (E-mail)' Subject: RE: MI-L Why MapInfo is interested in Web Mapping? Having dealt with a lot of different pricing models over the years I think that this is actually the fairest one of all, the idea behind the power units is that a server that has Z power units, is unable to serve as many hits as a Zx10 server. The older style of licensing is doing exactly the same thing but in a different fashion, the number of seats being used, in the old days it was easy to control the number of users, but in the days of Web Mapping and browsing it is more difficult to ascertain the actual number of users at any one time, it can change by such a varied amount. I think that this way it is quite a bit fairer to the customers as they now no longer have to worry about the number of concurrent users etc. However this model will only work if the power unit price doesn't blow out, that is something to closely watch. just my two cents worth as well, in a cold and rainy Australia Mark Pollard Senior Consultant Information Services DRYDEN TECHNOLOGIES Ph: +61 (2) 9542-2808 Fax: +61 (2) 9542-2806 Web: www.drydentech.com <http://www.drydentech.com> _____ The information contained in this email communication may be confidential. This is an interesting point. MI are interested due to the huge revenue possible! This comes from MapXtreme licensing. In the UK users are penalised for having the latest technology (ensuring that MI runs as fast as possible) and then wanting to install MapXtreme. Is this the same elsewhere - ie. pricing is on the power unit method - the faster yr processor the more u pay. Surely there is another way around this? Price per server? I appreciate it is not easy to price this kind of technology but being penalised for having a decent pc which makes THEIR mapinfo technology go faster is not really, IMHO, the best way. MI's response is: "..this is the way the market is going.." (quote). Does anyone else think this is true - i realise that ORACLE use this and of course MI have to completely jump into bed with them but perhaps MI does not have to be the sheep? Just ha'penny thoughts on a cold, wet monday afternoon in the UK. Would be interested to know what other implementors think. regards doug ....in cold and wet UK, or did i already mention that point! :) -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Neil Havermale Sent: 05 October 2000 23:04 To: MapInfo List (E-mail) Subject: MI-L Why MapInfo is interested in Web Mapping? http://www.nua.ie/surveys/how_many_online/ 380 million and climbing..... and Oracle services 97% of them?
