Maptitude - http://research.umbc.edu/~roswell/maptitude.html

Reinaldo:

Quite a list! Here are some thoughts on the first nine:

>1) I wish the possibility of editing simultaneously many things dialog boxes
>(more important are layers, selections and modify structure, in that order). I
>mean more options, for example to change the autoescale parameters for 367
>TIFF images I had to expend a long time because Mapt did not aloud to do that,
>even though I wanted to use the same scale for all of them. I do not remember
>other examples now for selections or modify structure, but certainly are.

Good idea; there are things that can be changed for groups of
layers/selection set/fields, but there probably could be more. On images,
TransCAD 4.0 introduces something that will probably be in Maptitude 4.5:
Image libraries, which are a single layer that can contain any number of
images.

>2) I wish to change the word Kilometers or whatever is written in English in
>the Legend scale to other language (Portuguese and Spanish are good to start
>with). [That is old too]

A thought on that is to have the map and page units on the System tab of
the User Preferences dialog box have an editable drop-down list with the
display name for each, which would be used wherever those units are shown,
such as the legend and dialog boxes. I would also like more flexibility in
choosing map units, such as the radius for the Select by Circle tool.

>3) I wish to hide a subtitle name without hide the contents of the class in
>the Legend (other lines under the subtitle) keeping the possibility of hiding
>the whole set as well, as it is now. That is I wish both things.

That is a popular request. The workaround is to put a period in the
subtitle text.

>4) I wish to have the possibility of importing coded field names, as we can
>now display coded fields contents, or at least an easy way to change several
>fields names that are pretty similar, other than typing each of them.

I'm not sure what you mean by a coded field names in this context; are you
talking about fields that contain codes, for which you can attach a lookup
table?

>5) I wish a button on the dialog boxes that aloud me to send a line to the top
>or to the bottom, not just one step up or down. (we usually work with many
>fields or layers).

Good idea.

>6) I wish a way of editing line symbols, as we can do with point symbols
>(using a True Type Font Editor).

As you indicate, point symbols use a Windows standard, TrueType fonts.
There is no equivalent standard for line symbols. While Maptitude has a
large set, the one you want may be missing. The GISDK function LineStyle()
creates new line styles, and SetLineStyle() sets the style for a layer or
selection set. It is a good idea for us to consider a way to add custom
line styles to the standard set, just as custom colors can be added (again,
that is done with a Windows standard method).

>7) I wish to have back (we had it in GIS+ and TransCAD for DOS) the
>possibility of creating a line theme splitting the links with different widths
>using two different fields from the dataview, i.e. number of passengers moving
>Downtown - Outskirts and Outskirts - Downtown direction.

TransCAD/GIS+ still have that for scaled-symbol themes, but Maptitude does
not handle AB/BA data.

>8) I wish to have a merge databases command.

A Merge Geography command is in TransCAD 4.0 and coming to Maptitude 4.5.

>9) I wish to have a Overlay command for Polygons/Points, Polygons/Lines and
>Lines/Points.

If I understand the wish: overlaying areas on lines can split the lines;
TransCAD 4.0 has and Maptitude 4.5 will have a Clip by Area command that
will subset points/lines/areas to what is inside a selection set of areas.
But another thing you may want to do that exists already (Edit-Fill Tag
option) is to tag points or lines by the areas they are in, or points by
the lines they are nearest.

10-14 and Margie's wishes later!
