Maptitude - http://research.umbc.edu/~roswell/maptitude.html
Traditionally, these business databases have been extremely expensive to
license - even for a limited amount of data. Some of the reasons that
Delorme and MapPoint have been able to include this offering are as follows:
1. The data is read only and non-exportable. Sure, you can view it on a
map, but you can NOT extract them, build custom themes or selection sets, or
perform any sophisticated spatial analysis with this data. This is done
intentionally to prevent users from buying these lists directly from their
sources (e.g. InfoUSA, Experian, D&B, Acxiom). Maptitude's advanced
functionality would, undoubtedly, make such an offering less attractive to
these vendors and thus much more expensive. Even the "yellow page" CD's now
have a limit on how many records you may export for mapping/marketing
purposes.
2. The user base for MapPoint and Delorme is not nearly as sophisticated as
the typical Maptitude user. THus, there is less of a danger of these users
extracting too much value from the business lists. They are given just
enough to whet their appetites.
Some alternatives to a bundled solution inmclude:
1. Purchasing a Yellow Pages CD from InfoUSA. They allow for exporting up
to 2,000 records for around $200.
2. Licensing a tool that allow for unlimited exports (10M+ records) with
coordinate information. These licenses usually run in the $20K - $30K
range. If anyone is interested in specific tools available, let me know.

Subject: [Maptitude] Bundling of National Business Listing Data with
Maptitude 4.5
