The immigration official at hand advised that those who have the means ought to get out of the country, and fast if at all possible. The official described his own position as "akirameru shikanai", which translates in this context to him being resigned to his fate. And this in a western region of Japan which is too far from Tohoku to feel the shaking of the quake. Even though I have been a refugee once before in my life, what is happening to the people of Japan today after the combined earthquake and nuclear disasters is one of the saddest things I have ever witnessed.
