In fact one of the primary social bases of the FSLN were small ranchers who had zero interest in socialism. They were tired of living under a dictatorship that favored the big landowners that were part of the Somoza kleptocracy.
Even if you don't agree with my analysis of the class forces arrayed against Somoza, the similarity between the Syrian big bourgeoisie and the Somoza machine is striking. Whether people yell out "venceremos" or "Alluah Akbar", a large part of what drives them to risk their lives in battle is a feeling that life under the old system is impossible.
