All disjointed as I am for the first time really examining the song:

Remember it well. And still think of it as a great song. Never looked upon
it as justifying slavery. No comrade or brother ever objected to it as I
recall.

Tail (Tale) end of the '60's with our rebellion still raising hell but
defeat looming. Both the song and our times rather remarkable explosions of
angst, pride, rebellion and a lingering never-gone undefeated resentment
left behind with the ashes.

Caine and his brother, same situation as Viet Nam-era draftees. Forced to
fight in a fight in which we had no dog. Caine and his brother, same
situation as the volunteers fighting in the streets and on the campuses.
Same outcome, defeat; and, by that, an overpowering disillusionment
alongside a lingering, never to fade, slow-burning anger at the sacrifices
made to no avail.

Like Virgil, we survived...but at what cost.

JAI
