All this is nothing IMO but association of ideas and attempting to project an occult meaning on a text that by itself--like nearly all pop music at least after 1964 or so, actually says nothing in particular and invites a hermetic interpretation, if indeed it requires any interpretation at all.
None of the "authorities" commenting here--indignant though many of them seem to be that the icons of their youth should be questioned in any way--seems to agree with any of the others about what that hidden meaning might be. IMO, all this esoteric puzzle solving is a waste of time and has little in common with the actual criticism of meaningful texts. The following link is my reply to all this tear-jerking over the Confederate Dead. I actually prefer Tennessee Ernie Ford's version, but this is more authentic. It presents little difficulty in interpretation although the vocabulary, after more than a century, is far from enlightened: https://www.loc.gov/item/jukebox-120485/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
