All this is nothing IMO but association of ideas and attempting to project an 
occult meaning on a text that by itself--like nearly all pop music at least 
after 1964 or so, actually says nothing in particular and invites a hermetic 
interpretation, if indeed it requires any interpretation at all.

None of the "authorities" commenting here--indignant though many of them seem 
to be that the icons of their youth should be questioned in any way--seems to 
agree with any of the others about what that hidden meaning might be.

IMO, all this esoteric puzzle solving is a waste of time and has little in 
common with the actual criticism of meaningful texts.

Dead.  I actually prefer Tennessee Ernie Ford's version, but this is more 
authentic. It presents little difficulty in interpretation although the 
vocabulary, after more than a century, is far from enlightened:
