Comrades,

I most certainly am no musician and ought defer to Comrade Professional
Musician. But his key statement was that "Chamber orchestras are small groups
where the members can see each other." True. If they have eyes in the backs of
their heads. (See photo, caption and Mission Statements of the Kaleidoscope
Chamber Orchestra just below.) So then it is a question of quantity and not of
quality? Not a matter of overarching idea but merely a matter of a greater or
lesser number? Fine and well. If not needed by 4 or 5. If not needed by the
twenty or so (in the photo below) then at what number? 50? Does that mean that
one of 49 does not need but one with 50 does? Or is it a matter of the
uber-consciousness of comrades thinking, acting, performing, if you will, in
concert. (NPI)

The point was that the 'conductor' of combined production is no longer
necessitated because of the complexity and size of the productive unit. What is
the role that the capitalist performs? Does he produce surplus-value of does he
merely 'conduct' the production of surplus-value. This is not a productive
function. And it is a non-productive function that is no longer necessitated.
The planning of production today can be done by technology. On this see W Paul
Cockshott’s " Calculation in-Natura, from Neurath to Kantorovich (
https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/0e3a/443d6fb314eb8b160576faa9928aa151d6fb.pdf
) ”, which to go one step further is not only not ‘conducted’ but, even
further, is not planned with the use of a pricing vector: neither money nor
labor, not even abstract human labor, if you will. And to go that brilliant
piece of work even one more step forward, with the direction of the smaller
units of the larger combination being done by the members of those smaller
units, the workers themselves, with no overarching 'conductor'. No king. No
Pope. No conductor. No capitalist. Marx, and following him, De Leon, were most
certainly correct...in their time. Those statements by them no longer hold.
That is the point. Not the divination of this or that ‘magic’ number.

About the Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra ( http://www.kco.la/about/ )

*Vision*

We envision a world where our commitment to a collaborative artistic process
results in profound orchestral performances that inspire people to pursue
cooperation and artistry in their own creative, professional and personal lives.
Mission

Kaleidoscope is a conductorless chamber orchestra dedicated to enriching lives
through exhilarating concert experiences, artistic excellence, musician
leadership, and connecting with the diverse communities of Los Angeles.

Core values

• We believe that our collective of musicians has ideas that are worthy of
respect and consideration; that each member has a voice worth hearing; that
every person, given the chance and tools, can help to create great art.
• We believe that pursuing a democratic process within the orchestra will
improve the quality of the performance, fulfill the collective vision of the
ensemble, and create a unique experience not found in traditional orchestras.
• We believe in developing an infrastructure that supports, empowers, and
values its musicians.
• We believe in bringing our performances and artistic process to audiences who
have little or no exposure to symphonic music with the belief that the
experience will enrich the lives of both the audience and the performers.
