I think you're less inclined to stereotype the working class if you grew up 
with it, but in my case identification with the the international workers’ 
movement only began when I went to university and studied its history. Later, 
like many of us, as a professional employee dependant on my salary for a 
living, I regarded myself as a member of the class, albeit of its most 
privileged stratum.

Most of my teenage friends didn't go to university and, unless they found 
themselves in a unionized setting, did not identify as working class, 
preferring instead to think of themselves and be seen as “middle class”. I 
don’t believe the general level of class consciousness in North America has 
advanced very much if at all since then, although there has always been a 
widespread and curious combination of resentment and admiration of “the rich”.
