And who is the reviewer, Trevor Jackson? He is, whether consciously or not, an economic confusionist. Take, for example, his article "Overproduction and Its Discontents" in the Baffler, May 4, 2023. Jackson puts it all on the inevitable mismatch between the production and the demand of many commodities:
All around us the anarchy of market exchange leads to the production of too much of some things and not enough of others. ( https://thebaffler.com/latest/overproduction-and-its-discontents-jackson ) Jackson discusses Keynes, Schumpeter, and other economists. What about Marx? He has one sentence: Sismondi’s ideas were read carefully by a young Karl Marx, who built a vast and forbidding edifice of critique based around these sorts of internal contradictions in the capitalist mode of production. This is upside down. Marx lacerated Sismondi's theories with strong criticism. But Jackson states the opposite, and he makes Marx off-putting to readers who are not ready to go into Marx's "vast and forbidding edifice." Jackson has not a word about a basic contradiction of capitalist accumulation, namely, the falling rate of profit. He seems to favor socialism and planning, but it is no more than a moral choice. Let Jackson the non-Marxist socialist tangle with the liberal Martin Wolf. They are both commentators who want to interpret the world for you but are useless for changing it. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
