I have no intention of defending a Pope, but there are a billion adherents worldwide to my former religion, and their politics has political ramifications. In the 80's, for example, many people fleeing from Reagan's dirty wars in Latin American ended up as migrants in US cities where right-wing Catholic bishops ran the Church. These Dioceses focused their work on anti-abortion campaigns, courted the powerful, and ignored the plight of the impoverished Catholic migrants crowding into their cities. And they ignored the migrants' children, who formed gangs in LA and other cities that were transplanted back to the Northern Triangle counties when the US began deporting gang members back to their parents' countries from which so many people leave for the US border, continuing the cycle.
Pope Francis has lessened the influence of conservative and MAGA clerics in the US, which might help in the fight against Trump's anti-immigrant campaign (against only non-white immigrants as shown by his actions). It should be pointed out the Father Jorge Mario Bergoglio became the first Pope named "Francis" in the church's two-thousand year history. That was for a reason: Saint Francis was an advocate for the poor and radical redistribution of wealth.
