But you also cite usage from inside the USSR, from William Chase. So the question of whether Stalin began the Cult of Personality is certainly relevant. For my part I dispute that, pointing to Radek who seems to have begun it, and the most nauseating proponent of the Cult - being Khrushchev. Stalin said to Lion Feuchwanger that his enemies were doing this in order to discredit him. The first summary of this overall line that I am aware of - that the Cult was erected to sabotage Stalin - was written in 1976 from Bland.
