Hi David: I think it is much deeper than might be implied by your comment. Your comment implies a degree of fatalism. However a genuinely revolutionary state would in my mind - instilled a much stronger anti-imperialist statement and actual vigilant training. That the CIA could plant or 'turn' someone in his close entourage (See NYT today) says a lot.
In fact for the all 'stuff' that has been going around on the list - about how the USSR could *not* have harboured such degree of counter-revolutionary action - it is a major wake-up call in my mind. However I agree with your remark that what happens on the streets now is the key. I think the outcome given the lack of preparation of the masses in a genuinely left position - is now - indeed 'over-determined' to sue a hackneyed phrase of the so-called Western Marxist camp.
