Thanks Hari for your comments. Well...I am fatalistic to the degree of a military perspective only. And, the U.S. did what Trump wanted and demanded that is, Maduro out of office (regime change). I don't believe in the "Fates" (Greek) but I did see how, again from a military POV, that the AFV were going to be incapable of defending their nation is simply looking at the history of such conflicts. I noted two of them I think. Basically Putin tried the same thing (sans actually removing by kidnapping Zelensky) but their idea, supported by both Russian and Western analysts at the time, that the Kiev government would be short lived. And...that includes me. But the Ukrainians were far better coordinated than anyone thought (including, I should add, many Ukrainian experts as well). But generally, Venezuela was not Ukraine. So perhaps I am fatalistic. I can live with that, not a problem.
My "wake up call" was when a spike was driven through the heart of the Vietnam Syndrome that had prevented a full war being waged by U.S. Imperialism when Saddam Hussein thought he could commit the biggest bank heist in history by invading Kuwait in 1990. The same 13 year later when the U.S. invaded. WHAT, other than the political situation changing, could of stopped the U.S. juggernaut??? Of course one could say the same thing about the Vietnam War sans the domestic political situation in the U.S. where masses of folks turned against the war as well as GI rebellions in the army itself. Don't forget as a great a victory the Vietnamese won in uniting their nation, according to General Giap himself, they almost caved during the Christmans bombing of Hanoi. Fortunately their SAMs were well aimed and helped wipe out those murderous B-52s and that was that. So...Hari...I think "what could the Venezuelans do to prevent what actually came down last night?". I don't know exactly but I have some strictly military ideas and of course a really longer political solution that would require going back to Chavez's far more popular reign.
