I agree. But even movements which have nothing to do with socialism (in
the broad sense of the word) have conducted much more honourable than
the Chavista regime. Think about the Palestinian resistance whose
leaders are regularly kidnapped or killed.
Sanctions and a single military attack (and the threat that "worse might
happen") were sufficient for the Chavista regime to capitulate!
Even the reactionary Mullah regime in Iran which has faced imperialist
sanctions for much longer and which suffered more casualties among its
leading figures in the 12-days war last year has not capitulated so
quickly and so shamefully!

External pressure does not /determine/ internal policy. The early
Soviet Union and early People's Republic of China were denied freedom
of foreign trade by the Western imperialist powers. That did not
determine that they had to give in to capitalism. On the contrary,
they rallied and organized the workers and peasants to start along the
socialist road right away.
The Chavista regime pursued social welfare financed by petro export
revenues. "Solidarity" lackeys like Roger Harris call this socialism,
while other "solidarity" lackeys see nothing except external pressure.
