The National Guard were deployed on the streets by the Governor a short time later. So why didn't any NG troops refuse, or threaten to refuse, then? I think part of the answer might be that the quote is bullshit. At least, I did not find any evidence by following the link, which points to an online newspaper that I don't have time to read in its entirety. This insinuation of pending mutiny also rings false to me because the first NG troops to be deployed to the streets are usually military police and police-certified troops (these would be weekend warriors who are weekday cops). So it seems unlikely to me that they were threatening mutiny. We were misled by exaggerations in 1973 to expect more response to our political work at Fort Riley. The very last issue of CAMP News had a heady report on an "uprising" at Fort Bragg, https://web.archive.org/web/20230105050643/https://content.wisconsinhistory.org/digital/collection/p15932coll8/id/86991. They printed this just as Chicago Area Military Project were shutting down their office due to lack of support. There was no uprising. Only troops who had just stepped-down from Vietnam with too much to drink on a hot summer night. It may be inspiring to tell stories of troops about to revolt and general strikes about to happen, but it does not help center the movement in what is actually happening.
