David Ranch is the DHCP guy; I don't know much about it.
However, isn't there some sort of way to get your dhcpd to renew your
'lease', or whatever it's called, without losing the IP address? That
seems a bit silly to just have a new IP address thrown at you, while
connections might potentially be up and running. It will break every
connection you've got at that time.

Do you use your external IP in your script? I don't. My script only
refers to my internal LAN's IP addresse (they don't change), and the
name of my external interface (also doesn't change). So if I dial up
and get a different IP, my existing firewall rules continue to work.
Do your firewall rules really need to refer to your current IP address?
