Dear Johan, I have downloaded the matplotlib 0.91.2 version (the one installed by default by my package manager) and ran the python setup.py build as you suggested before running the python setup.py install command. I fixed the problem! I am so grateful for you helping me sort this out finally. I am looking forwards to start using matplotlib.
