and /private with other root-level BSD symlinks. If you move /Applications, the next update or OS install/upgrade will create a new /Applications. The installer does not follow the symlink, as expected from experience on other systems. To quote Mr. Anguish: The second, much more serious problem, is the interaction that pax will have with symbolic links that it encounters during installation. If you have a symbolic link that points to another directory, pax will replace the link with a directory and any files below that directory will be installed in place. This can also have serious side effects, including disabling your system completely. End quote In other words, by trying to get a system that works well for the 'normal' user, it makes life very difficult for the experienced UN*X user. Many times it is easier to play along with 'the Apple Way'. SGI uses the 'one big disk' setup now too. Our 4D 320/GTX (1994) had several partitons the way a good UNIX system should. Our latest O2's just have one partition for the whole disk. But then they have a journaled filesystem ;) I've said it before- OS X is 'based-on' UNIX, but is _not_ UNIX. For instance, all I/O is through IOKit, not /dev. OS X uses something like /devfs, the only files in /dev are created by the kernel (and its extensions).
