I have a couple of HFS partitions on my beige G3, used to
make their contents available to both MacOS & Linux. Those
partitions were grayed out in the "install OSX on this
volume" screen, but mounted OK when it came up in OSX.

So I think we can say that OSX will *mount* an HFS volume,
but won't *boot* from one. (Isn't there a non-destructive
way to convert HFS to HFS+ anyway?)

As far as ext2 goes, I have to believe that it's difficult
to port the Linux ext2 code to a .kext -- otherwise, given
the number of people wanting ext2 support in OSX, it would
have been done already.
