Yeah, I bought the 3400 because it seemed like it would be a decent machine for the price I could afford. I am using KDE at the moment because it came with YDL, and it's better than twm. I don't have broadband at home, so acquiring s/w is a bit problematic. I'm going to grab iceWM and Blackbox soon, though. I'm used to these, so they're fine with me. The default "developer" install of YDL 2.3 failed. I did get through the base install, and have been installing RPM's manually. Trust me. :-) I ended up with something like this: 500MB MacOS, 1000MB /, 400MB /home, 128MB swap. I have the RAM maxxed (144) so this is a bit short of swap, but I doubt that casual desktop use will swap that much. Would have been nice to get a 3 or 5 GB drive, but oh well. Funny you suggest ext3, because I've been thinking about that too, when it didn't come up as an option during formatting. How do I convert ext2 to ext3? Are there any drawbacks to doing so?
