While not overly cost effective, why not trying
upgrading the 601's to 604's and try running NetBSD?

Hmm, tempting, but I think the "cost effective" element is important here otherwise I'd just buy a dual G4... *sigh* I run NetBSD on a sparc and that's more than enough for me - I'd really like to get a decent Mac OS (I'm stuck with 8) or a healthy linux install on to one of the Macs and YDL3 looks like just the thing... except it crashes. It's probably a YDL installer bug, and unlikely to be fixed for my vintage hardware. Thanks anyway :/

Have you tired debain? its free and net installable. Also easier than the Netbsd install I have.
Makes me wonder why Netbsd is always touted on these lists. "just upgrade so it works" *sigh*
Hard to get more cost effective $0 with no need to download a byte which you don't need and your upgrading nothing.

Can't help with the YDL install, its always worked for me.
Good luck
