I always wondered about the BSD hype myself. Then I tried OpenBSD on my Q800. While there is nothing wrong with Linux. I think *BSD is just a slightly more cohesive OS. Its a little more dork to be true, and slightly harder to find people to help you, but being such a dork OS, I find it works better. OpenBSD is great for anything secure.
Tried it, didn't think much of it.
The other reason we toute it, is because EVERYONE knows about Linux, while comparatively few know about the BSD's. And we want people to know...
Everyone knows about linux. :) So rather than recommend a os that is actually supported on a given machine this list recommends cpu or motherboard upgrades to run a dorky os with little support?
Have you ever done a ftp install of BSD? or linux for that matter. Fast, little bloat and you know what your installing as you install it. Just installing bsd is a pain.
BSD is secure, ok and debain has what, more holes than a M$ product?
Given the original poster is not a linux newbie who's trying to install yet another linux distro and failing do you think either recommending a different linux distro that should support the machine or offering some help regarding his problem, since "everybody knows about linux" would be a better place to start than pushing BSD and a upgrade path?
