Another thought...
Why not call your DSL provider and ask them to trade out that USB modem for the Alcatel Speedtouch Home, which has only an ethernet out port, so you could connect it straight to a router without having to use your iMac as a go-between. Perhaps they give that modem out precisely to keep you from using a router and sharing out the connection, but ask them anyway. My experience with those Alcatel USB modems has been that they are fairly unreliable. Whoever writes the drivers for that thing must have gotten fired from HP - 'nuff said.
