Ok, so I got copies of Mandrake PPC 9.1, and.... I have been trying to install them on a beige G3 333Mhz. Yup... I could have picked a 'way' easier Mac for my 'first time'. This is my 'first' attempt at installing Linux on anything, and needless to say this distribution assumes you have some idea what you are doing.
In other words, is anyone aware of an 'idot' guide to getting X Boot to even function on an Old World Mac? I think at this point I have something wacked (reports tomorow after I get a bit of sleep.) I probably stuck something somewhere it did not belong. I have lost the 'option' of setting the ramdisk (the dialong outlining that function is now missing), and when I try to run the Boot X app it says it can't find the 'prefrences' folder... At least before I messed all this up, I was getting as far as kernel panics. Hmmm... well... at least I can still boot OS 9.2.
In other words H..ELP...!
There is a good guide to installing and using BootX found on disc1/tutorials/install. Page 6 has a link at the bottom or use pages/install5B to start.
If you make a mess of bootX just throw the old one away and unpack a new copy from the cd
You use the "all.gz" for the install then change this in BootX to whichever kernel you chose to use during the install. You will also need to pass a command to the kernel so it knows where the / partition is.
The YDL3 setup is much the same. Like YDL you no longer need the ramdisk once the system is installed.
Sorry I dont have it installed at the moment and I was using 8.0 rather than 9.1, I doubt that matters much for the purpose of this note.
Good luck, its a very good distro once you get on top of it, the bootx loader being the worst bit, well partitioning is always fun.
The mandrake-ppc cooker list archieves are a good source of info for macs.
Cheers
