Excuse me for being totally ignorant of anything but the classic Mac OS. Just to let you all know that I haven't got the slightest idea on anything command-line like stuff, and unfortunately I also hate it. I'm one of those stubborn enough to refuse to ever run Mac OSX.

I'd rather not have to deal with pc hardware, and I can probably get my hands on several older pci Macs for next to nothing. Mainly in the 85xx-96xx range. Will it be not only possible, but also bearable (I don't find MacOSX on beige Gs bearable mind you) to run Debian on such old Macs?

And if not, what should I then look for instead?

Depends entirely on your plans and what you want to do with it. I had a 40mhz Quadra 840AV serving 15-20 gigs a month of traffic without breaking a sweat (though it was static content and large files, no CGI or scripting). It even did X manageably, but it did require some patience at times.

Something like a low-end PowerMac might do X well enough to be worth the upgrade, like perhaps a 6500/250 or even 7500/8500 at 250mhz or so. Even those are getting dirt cheap these days and would run Linux very well.

On the other side of things, you could go all the way to a 25mhz IIci and still do just fine, or even lower, for basic stuff :)
