Everybody keeps recommending Yellow Dog Linux to me and the YDL website
makes it look like a good OS. It does seem to be a little large and
complex and graphical, particularly for my initial experiments, which I
want to focus on the command line and on the old traditional unix type
programs so I can get a good foundation in how to use that stuff. I
would also like to download the initial installation rather than buy it
on CD, so size matters. I used to use MS-DOS and DR-DOS a lot in the
late eighties and early nineties, so the concept of a command line isn't
entirely foreign to me, but I know very little about unix or linux.

Take a look at Debian. They offer a net-based install ( I've used that w/ broadband connection -- its easy! ) and you can control what packages are installed using dselect or tasksel. The "apt" package management tool makes installing software and updating a breeze. You should browse the available packages online and see if they have programs that might do what you are interested in.

I've tried YDL 3.0 on the mac and have since migrated all my machines to Debian. However, if ease of installation is a primary concern you might go with YDL since Debian's installer is the only downside of Debian I can think of.

FWIW, I too have an All-In-One. I have successfully got it running OS X 10.2.6, OS 9.1 and Debian Linux although I originally tried installing YDL. YDL would install but then I would loose OS X, which upon re-installation, would cause YDL to disappear! It turned out that partitions on my hard disk where actually DISAPPEARING! After farting around with that a couple times I put Debian on and it has worked great ever since.
