I've no idea about the Mac desktop (serious newbie with hardware issues
before I can change that properly), but under standard X you should find
that CTRL-ALT-Backspace will kill X and drop you back to the console.
Well, it does on mine, but then I boot to a console and then manually
start X- there's a chance that it will restart X and drop you to a login
prompt if you have a graphical login setup, which I suspect would be the
case on OS X.

By the way, is there something on that web link, or have I missed
something earlier in the thread? All I get is a blank page, although  I
do get a '605' icon delivered, so something is getting to me!
