Will I be able to use UltraWide SCSI hard drives to full advantage in a 9600 running Linux? Are there Linux drivers for the Adaptec 2940UW and/or the Initio Miles series of cards, or are they even needed...?

Check the Linux documentation project- <http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO/scsi.html>

I don't understand the "full advantage" comment.

Also, does a G3 upgrade need cache enabling software under Linux?

Depends on the upgrade device. Some do, some don't. I would check for Linux compatibility with the manufacturer. The one I used ( Sonnet ) did not.

One of the biggest bottle necks with the 9600 is the 50 MHz memory bus. A beige G3 with a 66 MHz memory bus will be faster than most upgraded 9600's. The B & W 300 MHz G3 ( 100 MHz memory bus ) I use now is so much faster than the 9600 I had with a 450 MHz G3 upgrade, I'm still kicking myself a year later for ( in my mind ) wasting money on the G3 upgrade.

YMMV.
