1) Can one just add the 68882 to '030 machines, or upgrade LC040 to full '040, and run A/UX on "unsupported" machines?
Not necessarily. For instance, even though a Quadra 605 is not an A/V machine, you can't run A/UX because some of the hardware is too new. The IIsi definitely can run A/UX, and I am pretty sure the LC III can, too.
Background: Finding a machine to run A/UX on is tough. I only keep Macs I have specific uses for, because otherwise my wife would kick me into the garage to live with them. :D So my only 68k Macs are IIsi, LC III, Q840AV. A/UX doesn't support AV models (bummer!), so the Quadra is completely out. Of the others, both lack FPU, which A/UX needs. I know IIsi ethernet cards exist which can add an FPU, but the LC III is better (smaller, faster). Are there any LC NICs which have a FPU socket? (I think I have a LC NIC, but I don't remember it having a FPU socket.) If so, I'll look for one. I'd rather not drag another 68k machine home, for the reason given above, especially since they are all physically bigger than the two I have.
Yes, many LC slot ethernet cards have sockets. I have one here which I use in a Quadra 605. If you find one without a socket, I'd be glad to trade.
2) Can I set up one machine with both A/UX and NetBSD on the disk and have it boot correctly? Can the two share /home and swap partitions?
I'm not sure how A/UX automounts, but my educated guess is that it automounts Mac volumes, as any Mac would, but it probably requires changes to /etc/fstab for the A/UX partitions. But since both NetBSD's booter and A/UX look for the OS in an A/UX root type partition, you'd probably need to keep NetBSD on a separate drive. Luckily, you can tell the NetBSD booter what SCSI ID to use to boot.
Background: I lied, I do have an SE/30 also. But it's already set up nicely to run NetBSD, which I am quite happy with. I'd hate to backup everything and reformat it for an experiment, since it is my main file/web server at home.
What was your solution with regards to the screen? Do you have it set to auto-blank, or do you just turn the contrast / brightness all the way down when you're not on the local terminal?
