My worry is that Maypole has a lot of baggage that we'd like to rearrange to be able to simplify understanding and to enhance features. A number of recent changes seem to me to just add more bags to the pile. If we're going to add new features like model type configuration, I'd rather add them where they belong - like Peter's original proposal.
