In my case, I use essentially the same address book for YAM and MDII. 
If you do that with AEMail and MDII, importing its address book should
work too.  You are trying to get back your old MDII address book, I
have not found a way to do that.  I suggested this because it worked
for me.  Better YAM's address book in MDII than none was my thought. 
Maybe you could write a script to import your old address book into
MDII 1.4 or whatever, the internal one did not work here, or apparently
on your system.  If you have a way of importing it into Contact
Manager, that should work too, that's probably what the import from YAM
did here.
