If you are talking about newsgroups rather than mailing lists this
problem is not unknown. It could be a problem of lack of
synchronisation between the time set on your comluter and the time
used by the ISP or wherever you download your newsfeed from.
The effect is similar to problems caused by two digit year identifiers
at the millennium rollover. The newsfeed thinks that if your time is
in the future, as far as it is concerned, that the last time you
enquired for new postings was a very long time ago. Hence you get the
lot :^(
IIRC you can't just unsubscribe then re-subscribe opting for the last
100 posts. You might have to delete (or remove) all the previous posts
in the folder first.
