Richard, the short answer is "Yes, it remembers and starts recording
from your last play (or record) position until you remove the disc".
But I think Richard has just shown why Sony finds no compulsion to
change the END SEARCH botch: because first time buyers of Sony gear
have no idea about this issue.
What we need is a *polite* petition/bboard style web page, describing
the problem, and asking users to sign it (perhaps adding a sentence or
two about the inconvenience it has caused them). Anyone making such a
page should feel free to use the example below if you like:
To: Sony Electronics Corporation
Portable Minidisc Division
Tokyo, Japan
A Petition for Sony to Remove the END SEARCH Function from
its Portable Minidisc Recorders
WHEREAS Sony portable Minidisc recorders require that users
push the "END SEARCH" button in order to have a new
recording be placed after existing material on the
Minidisc, and
WHEREAS Often in the hectic moments before a starting a
recording it is easy to forget this crucial step,
leading to loss of precious material, and
WHEREAS Other Sony Minidisc equipment (decks, bookshelf
systems, pro-equipment) and other manufacturers'
Minidisc equipment automatically place new recordings
after existing material, offering no loss of
functionality without need for an END SEACH button,
and
WHEREAS Minidisc is an inherently random access medium, with a
Table of Contents directory and an embedded computer
that makes automatically positioning to the end of
existing material a natural and straightforward task,
and
WHEREAS The END SEARCH function only serves to complicate the
user interface of MD portables with NO ADDED BENEFIT,
WE THE UNDERSIGNED kindly request that Sony henceforth remove
the END SEARCH function from its portable recorders
and adhere to the convention followed by all other
Minidisc equipment makers of automatically placing
newly recorded material at the end of existing
material.

I will put a link to it on the top "gear" page, under "Trouble".
I think the petition bboard should also have a place for counterpoint,
so PrinceGaz can say why he thinks the feature should stay. :-)
