That, my friend, IS the problem. To avoid losing some or all of your
previously recorded material when you add a track to a minidisc, you
must push END SEARCH. It is best to get in the habit of pushing it
every time before you record to avoid a problem.

For instance, I went to a party and I recorded some friends singing a
song. They did an excellent job and I played it back to see if I had a
good take on it. I let a few others listen and played about 30 seconds
into the song and stopped it while we did something else. A few minutes
later, I recorded some more songs the people were playing or singing.
When I when home, I listened to the recording as I drove. I was really
disappointed, that because I had forgotten to press END SEARCH, all I
had of that precious first tune, was the first 30 seconds, I had
recorded over the rest of it. This was particularly disappointing as
one of the singers has cancer and I really wanted to keep that
recording.
