I read the item about batteries for the Sharp MT161.

I have been trying to use Nickel-metal Hydride batteries on this MD unit.
Knowing about the charge button in the battery cavity, I bought some AA NiH
cells, taped them together with a button-depressing bit of plastic and put
them in the player. It plays fine from externally charged batteries, but
doesn't want to charge them in the unit. On switchoff it often says POWER?
on the display.

I am powering from a mains PSU that delivers about 5.3V when running the MD.

Anyone know how to get the unit to charge the cells and what the POWER?
complaint is?
