They will very unlikely be identical. MD uses a lossy data compression
algorithm (ATRAC) to reduce the amount of data that it needs to store on
the disc to around one fifth of what raw PCM would require. The idea of
the algorithm is that, in very crude terms, there's no point recording what
can't be heard; if a gun is shot and a pin drops to the floor
simultaneously there's not a lot of point recording the pin!
If you tried the same experiment with a CD-R or DAT recorder you should
find that the waveforms are identical since these record raw PCM.
