This is great stuff.
Attached is a response I got to my feature request for more advanced serial
port configuration in VMWare Fusion, containing details of how to set up serial
ports to named pipes. This should be helpful to those of us who need, for
example, to bootstrap a setup procedure from one VM to another. Linux and
Windows VMWare products have the feature, even VMWare Player Plus to which
VMWare Fusion Pro grants a license, but incredibly the Mac Fusion product
doesn't; hopefully they'll add it in future.

future versions of the product.
While it's not supported, you might find that VMware Fusion provides some of
the syntax you need by directly adding entries to the vmx file.
For example:
serial0.present = TRUE
serial0.fileName = "/tmp/serial0"
serial0.fileType = "pipe"
serial0.pipe.endPoint = "server"
Or
serial0.pipe.endPoint = "client"
I'd be interested in feedback on this for your use-case.
