My dear, good-for-nothing brother (who is on this list) got me on Giffgaff for the iPad, and it looks like it's the only way to do this. It's PAYG, but you get the option to do recurring payments when your balance runs low, and also to take from your balance the cost of what Giffgaff calss "Goodybags" and "Gigabags", which are respectively for phones (no tethering) and data devices (tethering OK). Yes, Three PAYG is cheaper. The contract is cheaper still. But this way you get a better signal, no shit customer service, and--best of all--no bloody obligations. You can stop whenever you please; you don't have to be happy with a poor choice for a whole year.
