I posed this question to the list awhile ago and got no reply:
Did Microsoft fix the bug that crashes windows if you leave a midi
input port open?
I had noticed that question and its lack of response--one of the
reasons I was worried, a few days back, if anyone was here. I guess
the lack of a response is simply because no one knows for sure. It
seems using pm_dll.dll is still the safest approach.

I wanted to thank Roger and Aaron for their suggestions, some of
which have been off-list. The responslet above originally went just
to Roger because I assumed list messages had a Reply-To: header
pointing replies back to the list. Silly me. I guess the fact that
one has to reply-all (or manually add media_api to the address list)
is one reason traffic is moderate here.
Anyway, having probably made every mistake there is to make I seem to
have MIDI (out) working with PM under Visual Studio. Maybe.-| Testing
has only been superficial so far because I'm also trying to port some
timing code to use with the MIDI generation.
I'll follow up with notes when I've got something more solid.
