Considering all the work that is on going for the N900CE images based on MeeGo
1.3, I was wondering if the N900CE Fall release will be based on this image, or
if there exist any criteria to choose the 1.2 based image over this one.
My opinion is that we should go with 1.3 only. We can do 1.2 images as
well, but that image doesn't have so many updates and those that it has
can be fetched with following commands to the last released 1.2 image:
$ zypper ref
$ zypper update
Only hard blocker for the 1.3 image we have is the fact that dialer
isn't starting up properly. I would like to get a one QA report from
Core and UX if possible before making the decision though (not for the
current images but maybe for the next that we will have).
Well, in IRC Marko (Sage) listed several major problems in basic
functionality that last week's image had:
1) usb-networking
As a workaround we are using now nokia-usb-networking instead of
usb-moded. phdeswer is working to fix usb-moded.
2) sshd
Issue fixed and submitted to T:T.
3) MTF scrolling/dragging
Issue fixed and submitted to Project:MTF
4) systemui crash
Seems to be fixed. I suspected this to be recompile issue of some
packages in T:T and those are now fixed.
5) bme (submitted but not tested in image yet)
Submitted a fix to this as well and after updating packages the bme
starts on boot. Still needs verifying if it is charging but looks
promising. The indicator in MTF home doesn't work though atm.
These would have been show-stoppers, but now it looks like we can close all
of these this week. (Next week's image should be just fine). So unless new
major issues are found, we could go for 1.3 based image.
There will be some regression compared to 1.2, but for me it would still be
worth it as we are getting newer Qt, and better version of Qt Components. Also
the UI performance on 1.3 seems quite promising.
The plan has been to use 1.3 as base for Fall release, and it still looks
like we can do it.
*** Sage's new TOP10 problem list with 1.3 ***
1) dialer doesn't start (well isn't included atm but the patched version
doesn't start)
- alterego is working on this
2) mce missing systemd service file. Also needs some adaptation for new
MeeGo structure.
3) MTF is not scrolling to the end of lists on some apps
4) Camera is not tested at all on top of 1.3. meego-handset-camera
application starts though.
5) sms doesn't start but that is because of dialer AFAIK
- Should be fixed with 1)
6) BT has some problems related to power management.
- More info from stskeeps and topro
7) We don't have boot / shutdown screens atm.
8) New background is needed :)
9) usb-moded not working, not essential, but would be nice to have.
- phdeswer is working on this
10) We are missing some apps because the Tablet UX app development.
However I didn't see these so important as their were very slow.
*** UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS for old images ***
The last image (1.2.90.3.0.20110909.81.CE.2011-09-13.1) can be updated
with following commands as root:
First lets enable SSH from the terminal:
$ su root
$ zypper ref
$ zypper install openssh-server
After this you should be able to connect with ssh to the device and do
the rest of these commands through SSH (I don't recommend of doing these
from terminal).
$ zypper ref
$ zypper update
$ zypper install -t pattern ce-base mtf-handset-ux
$ cp /etc/xdg/meegotouchhome/launcherbuttons.data
/home/meego/.config/meegotouchhome/launcherbuttons.data
$ chown meego:meego /home/meego/.config/meegotouchhome/launcherbuttons.data
NOTE: If you have any problems with this update please let me know. In
case of problems it would help a lot if you would be able to get the
full log about the outputs of commands shown above.
There has been at least one unsuccessful update done, however my device
updated fine.
*** NEW IMAGE SCHEDULE ***
If we manage to tackle couple of the issues from my TOP10 list I'm going
to create a new image around 17:00 UTC+3 today.
Regards,
Marko
