I'm pretty biased in favor of *not* opening a new tab/window by default. That's because 1) I can't stand websites opening new windows in my browser, and 2) if I want a new tab (which I frequently do), I can easily choose to open one on my own.

I'll admit, of course, that my browsing methods may not be representative.

Actually its quite annoying to lose your Melkjug page when you click on a link. The user might just want to take a quick peek at the article and go back to their Melkjug reading. I know that Delicious used to irritate me when it did not open in new tabs. I kept losing the delicious page that had all the links I wanted to research. Google has also made that decision out of gmail, you dont loose Gmail when you move into Cal or Docs or Reader etc.

Just some thoughts to add on here.

Good catch, Randall. Consider me +1 for consistency. Whatever we decide, titles and links within the item should probably do the same thing.

We do, however, open the link in a new window when someone clicks the headline. This seems asymmetrical. But I understand (and agree with) your argument.

I'm not generally a fan of sites targeting a new window by default.

If I'm playing with filters to fine-tune my jug (or just tinker with various results), and I click through to a linked site, I don't lose the adjustments to those filters when I click the back button - at least, based on my test just now on dev.melkjug.com my filter change appears to have been preserved.

Unless there are cases where users might lose data by navigating away, I'd lean towards not opening new windows.

I suppose we could consider that being an account-level preference - some folks may have very strong feelings on both sides of the "new window" approach.

How do we feel about rewriting links to have them target a new window/tab? I keep accidentally clicking links in my articles and moving away from Melkjug.
