Andy,
It's good to see another 4 wheel disc Datto out there, good write up but the
only thing you missed was that you have to ream out the Skyline mounting
bracket centre hole approx 1.8mm for the 510 axle to pass through. Also, you
can use the umbrella 510 handbrake if you have a console and don't wish to
mount a centre handbrake, it's very similar to the original 510 but the
Skyline cables also require shortening.
If anyone is considering a rear conversion using the R31 rears with 200B
fronts I'd recommend you use the stock 180B booster and dual 3/4" master
cylinder as the 7/8" cylinder is too squishy, still works well just doesn't
have a good feel if that's important to you.
The other thing you'll notice if you drive on the street in traffic with 4
discs is that Hyundai drivers are prone to tailgate you and they get a real
surprise as gentle braking in a 4 disc 510 is a both feet on the pedal lock
up exercise for them, for that matter that goes even for most modern day
buzz boxes. I've nearly been hit some many times since upgrading the brakes
so I have adopted a policy of allowing a bit more space in front of me when
someone's up my ar*e which I spose is a strange practice with awesome
brakes.

Subject: My brakes!
I just thought I would let you all know exactly how much it cost me to put
some good brakes on my 1600. I blew the budget a little by buying some new
bits. You could do all this for half the price if you tried very hard. The
only disadvantages are that the callipers are damn heavy and the rotors
arn't vented. But I did take my car out to the new Queensland Raceway and
after many, many laps my brakes didn't even look like softening. And that
track is terrible on brakes. This is what I bought:
Front:
Pair of 240K Struts $50
New 240K Rotors $180
Toyota Hilux 4 spot Callipers $90
2 Calliper Kits $100
Back:
R31 Skyline Rotors $75
R31 Skyline Callipers $75
R31 Skyline Handbrake + Cable $30
R31 Skyline Mounting Bracket $20
The only other bits I needed were a 180B Booster (Had it laying around.)and
a 240K Master Cylinder. ($75)
The front brakes all bolted on perfectly. I had to swap struts and mount
the calliper at the front though. And they still fitted under 13 inch rims
after taking off a little calliper with an angle grinder. The back took a
lot more work. I had to re-drill the holes on the skyline mounting bracket
to get the calliper where I wanted it. I then had to use the angle grinder
on the bracket to take of any bit of the flange that hit. After that,
rotors and callipers bolted on, perfect offset. The biggest trouble then
was putting in the hand brake. I got the cable shortened, modified the
skyline bracket and cut a hole in the floor. It was all fairly easy.
I am extremely happy with the brakes. I can't wait to get this damn fuel
injected, turbo charged L series in the car so I can really test them out.
If anyone wants more info just email me.
Happy datsuning
Andy.
