Justin,
The auto spark could have had two reasons for his comments, (1) he is a
cluey bloke who know something about engines or (2) a complete dill who
didn't want to work on your dato much.
This doesn't help you much so let's look at the problem.
The difference between points and triggered ignition is not the main issue
here. I don't know what engine you have but let's say it is a bog stock
L18/L20B. The advance curve that comes with the S2 bluebird ei is designed
to work out of the box on that type of engine, the pollution levels will be
good and you wont have detonation. So if you have a stock to mild L20B
engine you will be in front by a long shot ie set and forget Ign timing and
no dwell to set, good starting and if the dizzy is in good shape you'll have
nice smooth running to the red line. Tune ups consist of plug and filter
changes with the occasional check of the cap & leads - too easy eh.
OK, stick the same dizzy on a moderate to highly modified engine with DCOE
webers etc and it will probably cause the engine to run like a dog. You fix
this by having the dizzy regraphed by someone who knows what they're doing
and have the equipment on hand and importantly know how to use it to do the
job properly.
So depending on what your engine is you should be able to work out which of
my first statements applies to your auto spark.
There are NAPS Z engines in trucks, vans and the like that are built to all
sorts of spec levels in the USA. The Japanese Z18ET is in the NAPS Z family
but it was developed for competition and it's definitely no hacker. If
you're old enough you will recall George Fury drove a Bluebird 910T at
Bathurst and cracked the first ever 100 mph lap in qualifying - engine used
was the Z18ET.
regards
Terry

Terry/ OzDatters,
Thanks for the reply:-)
But..
Talking to an auto sparky today(not a great one but still!) He recommended
that I stick with the points. With regular tuning he says they are a lot
less hassle than EI? I'm confused, never had to deal with points before so
obviously always had EI; ever on the cooper s I built. Need some advice.
Also read an article on "jason 510" site stating that these Naps Z engines
are NOT really meant for HP, more emmissions? Doed this hold any
concequence?
Thanxs again.
