David,

Before going to Nissan I would return the car to factory specifications. ie
take the ram pod off. This will give them less to bitch about. I do not
think they can refuse to fix the problem if it is mechanical failure
providing you keep the servicing up to date. As far as I know you do not
have to go to Nissan for servicing (there are laws to stop monopolies in
business), but I would be going to a qualified mechanic. I would not want to
fight a legel battle on the above.

FYI I have a Nissan Micra which was purchased from Nissan as an exec vehicle
(8000km). The second gear syncro was stuffed. It took six months of stuffing
around to get them to admitt the prob but eventually they replaced the box.

Good luck.
Trev

I have seen a similar result when an Alfa broke a conrod. Conrod punched
holes in the block, oil went onto the hot exhaust and up she went. Probably
unlikely to be the cause though, if he was only cruising. My money is on
catastrophic alternator failure resulting in a short and fire. Although
electrical fires aren't often "infernos" unless petrol becomes involved. You
probably have burnt and melted wiring sensors etc. to play with now.

Cheers,

Chris

Subject: engine go bang bang

just a quick question not datto related but it's a nissan so I thought
someone may know

my mate has an 1999 N15 Pulsar and has asked me to go to his place tomorrow
afternoon and take a look at it for him.
just thought I'd check with the people in the know and see if they have any
ideas as to what I should be searching for.

I only ask because the description he gave me on the phone sounds like 4
problems all in one all happened at the same time so I thought I'd get some
opinions

This is the way he explained it to me.......

"I was driving down the freeway at around 95-100 km/h when I heard a
fairly loud BANG. At the same time every light in the dashboard came on and
went off then the engine just cut out. I rolled over to the side of the
freeway and got out and popped the bonnet, only to discover my engine was a
raging inferno. Someone driving past pulled over and had a fire
extinguisher in their car and helped me put it out. I got the car towed
home. I can crank it over but there is a very loud clunking noise."

It's got me confused, the dash board sounds like a wiring problem. At first
I thought the bang and the fire were related, but once he told me about the
clunking noise I figure the bang was something letting go internally. The
clunking he described definately sounds bottom end, perhaps whatever it was
that made the bang has found it's way into the crankcase? Then there's the
fire, my guess a fuel leak somewhere, possibly ignited by a short which
would have also explained the dash, well at least I'd like to think it's
that, because if it was simply ignited by the engine heat then that again
leaves me pondering the dash lights. Now I'm left trying to work out why
the hell this all happened at once.

Any thoughts would be greatly appretiated.

Thanks guys'n'gals
Dave
