RE: engine go bang bang

I have seen a similar result when an Alfa broke a conrod. Conrod punched holes in the block, oil went onto the hot exhaust and up she went. Probably unlikely to be the cause though, if he was only cruising. My money is on catastrophic alternator failure resulting in a short and fire. Although electrical fires aren't often "infernos" unless petrol becomes involved.
