Simon,
I take it's in a 1600. You may have to undo both engine mounts, exhaust mani or
flange and top radiator hose and maybe the fuel lines to lift the engine
slightly to get the sump off.
remove stone guard
undo all sump bolts and let it drop onto the xmember
undo oil pickup bolts and let the pickup drop into the sump but remove the
gasket
try to slide sump out thru the passenger side.
if it don't want to play, then undo the mounts, flange and top hose, disconnect
the throttle bar and jack the engine very carefully from under the front
pulley. A couple of 1" or so blocks placed under the engine mounts allows you
to get the jack out of the front and give you max clearance to get the pan out.
If you wish to use a sealant make sure you use a "sensor safe" breed like
Permatex Blue RTV.
