I have only got the info second hand, but Dave FERON reckons the Z18 crank
is lighter than the L18. I have never weighed the Z18 so I wouldn't have a
clue. As for bore size I heard 90mm, and that numerous blocks were
ultrasounded to find one with adequate wall size, but again this is 2nd
hand.

I will make some less than discreet enquiries and let you know!

Brad,
What's the go with John using the Z18 crank in our favourite Nismo L18
configuration - I take it you rounded up as the bore should be 88.8 mm for
the 1932 cc screamer.

Terry

John Spencer comes from up here, lives near me actually. He won the Qld
Rally Championship in a V8 Commodore a coupla years agp. The Datto is an L18
with 90mm bore and Z18 crank, and was built as a copy of Dave Feron's
machine I believe (don't quote me though that may be wrong)

John can drive, and can set up a car. he has proven himself many times and
hurt many an ego.

Hey guys,

I guess it doesn't attract much attention interstate, but the Classic
Adelaide Rally has been on for the last 4 days here. It's been held each
year for 4 years now, but I've never gone and checked it out. Silly me! It
takes in some of the best (sealed) hills roads as closed competition stages,
linked by transport stages. They do around 200 - 300k's each day.

This year I took Thursday off work and climbed up the Collingrove Hillclimb
with a couple other guys from the Adelaide 1600 Club to watch them go for
it. There were some 1600's and 240Z's competing (quite a few Z's). I didn't
think they stood a chance against the likes of Porsches, Ferraris and Andrew
Cavalli's all conquering Escort Twin Cam ('98 winner) - minimal mods are
allowed. Goes to show how wrong you can be...

It brought a big idiot grin to my face when John Spencer's (QLD) blue 1600
(H510) blasted over the first crest - trusty L series at full noise! What a
driver! Pardon my ignorance, but I'd never heard of him before. He was
absolutely driving the wheels off the thing! I've never seen a 1600 (or any
car come to think of it..) driven this hard before. Man those L series
babies can take a hammering!!! I have renewed respect for them.

We then scurried around to Gorge Rd. to watch them come through the next
competition stage. These guys are mad! Once again Cavalli's Escort and the
blue Datto looked to be well and truly on the pace. There was also a guy
with huge balls pedalling a GTHO Falcon VERY hard (crashed next day...).

On Saturday I noticed they were doing Gorge Rd. again and just couldn't help
myself. I found a good spot at the top carpark and waited for the fun. Time
well spent too. They run slowest-to-fastest at 1 minute intervals. The last
25% of cars were truly amazing. When Cavalli came through in the Escort (you
could hear the induction roar echoing through the hills for ages before he
actually appeared) we thought "My God! How is anyone gonna top that!". Well
it wasn't long before the Datto blasted around the corner. SHEEEEEEEIT!!!
How can a car be so out of shape and stay on the road??? I am truly not
worthy. This guy is not one of us mere mortals! All the assembled onlookers
just looked at each other dumbfounded with jaws on the ground!

Needless to say he went on to win the event by 13 seconds (out of 4 days -
that Escort doesn't mess around either!). I am really looking forward to
next year. I might take leave for the whole event.

Craig is considering timing the next Annual 1600 Club day so that interstate
guys could come over for that, and then check out some of the Classic
Adelaide events later that week. I reckon this is a great idea, and I'd
highly recommend it to anyone interested. Well worth the effort. Top fun
guaranteed. Especially if you are a bit of a nostalgia freak (I'm not - just
an incurable revhead). And they generally have some classic drivers too -
the ever-so-popular Sir Jack B of course and this year I spotted Win Percy,
Allan Grice and Norm Beechy among the drivers.

Sorry I got a bit carried away... Oh, and sorry about all the exclamation
marks! (ooops..)
