There are a couple of nylon components in the gearstick movement that may be
worn or missing. They are pretty standard components across a range of
Datsun L series gearsticks.

Take the rubber boot off and take out the gearstick. Check for two nylon
bushes around the horizontal pin that holds the stick into its housing - its
the one with a circlip on one end. These bushes could be missing
completely - cost about $10 a pair - expensive for what they are, but the
shift feels new when they are replaced.
