A tragedy indeed. I was actually on my way to Eastern Creek at the time of
the crash. My sister however was allready there and saw the whole thing!
>From what she has told me, the medias story is a little different.
There was NO paramedics on site, which for starters i think should be
compulsory in any sort of racing. There were NO fire marshalls and the fire
trucks were right up the other end of the pits! When the fire started about
20 sec's after he hit, it took approx 5 mins before a fire truck arrived.
Had a fire marshall been on site, Todd could have been pulled from the
wreckage. Paramedics took approx 7-10 mins to arrive and alltho the media
reported that he had in fact survived the crash and had a heart attack on
the way is false. The paramedics were in no rush to get Todd out after the
fire was put out and even when they did get him into the Ambo there was no
lights or sirens when they left. This would indicate that Todd was allready
dead by the time the fire was put out.
Now i have looked at the TV footage closely and i have come up with a simply
theory as to why he crashed. Everyone knows they were racing backwards and
everyone knows it was a top speed event. Now, when u look closey at the
footage u can see a white post just before he locks them up. This post is
100 metres past the point at where they record your speed. Todd brakes
about 120-130 metres past that point. Not far at 250kmh and not long at
250kph. I think Todd has simply misread where his top speed was being
recorded and kept in flat right up to the white post. Its then he relized
he came too far and jumped on the brakes. However, Todd shouldnt have
misread it because the drivers breifing should have made it 100% clear as to
were the top speed was being recoreded. This is only a theory that brewed
up in my head and could be completely wrong, but we will never know for sure
what Todd was thinking.
Accidents like this are avoidable if safety is number 1 priority. It just
doesnt seem right that someone let crazy drivers on the track clock there
top speed while theres a solid concrete wall at the other end. What would
happen if i was in a bog stock daihatsu charade and the brakes failed?
Theres no run off area, no sand pit and no tyres in front of a solid
concrete wall. As somebody had allready said, if they actually opened up
the track as a run off area as a safety precaution, this accident may have
not been fatal as there is tonnes of sand and tyres if u lose it around the
corner. But for some reason they left the most obvious spot for an accident
bare concrete!
I know this is a long e-mail but i thought i had better share my views on
this disaster. My condolences and best wishes to Wilke's family, i hope this
sort of accident never happens again.
